STARS Testing
Participate in a fun athletic testing event to see where you rank among your peers! Last year we had a National Top Scorer with our Club. What will this year hold?

S.T.A.R.S. (Standardized Testing of Athleticism to Recognize Skaters) is a USFS off-ice fitness assessment held throughout the country to test levels of athleticism in the areas of strength, power, speed, agility, balance and flexibility -- all of which are necessary and important in the sport of figure skating.

The testing will take place in Walnut Creek on Sunday, April 28th. Registration opens this Friday, March 1st.

The Skating Club of San Francisco is proud to honor the Bay Area’s own Kristi Yamaguchi and her family at its 2019 Gala on March 30, 2019.

Kristi’s on-ice resume is superb, including the 1992 Albertville Olympic championship, followed by a starring role in the highly successful Stars on Ice tour. Her work away from the rink is equally superb, particularly her Always Dream Foundation that for the past seven years has fought child illiteracy.

Please help The Skating Club of San Francisco celebrate Kristi and her family at SCSF's 2019 Gala. She will be joined by skaters belonging to our Bay Area community, including Olympian Vincent Zhou, US Junior Dance Champion Anthony Ponomarenko and his partner Christina Carriera, US Junior Champion, Alysa Liu, US Junior Silver Medalist Dinh Tran, US Pairs Silver Medalist Sarah Feng and her partner TJ Nyman, and US National competitors Emilia Murdock, Sierra Venetta, Kate Wang and more.

Tickets are on sale NOW!

The Pioneer Fund established a college scholarship program in 2010 to assist eligible current and former amateur and professional ice skaters who dedicated their lives to skating and now wish to pursue a college education. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time undergraduate study at an accredited institution of the student's choice. Eligible individuals are skaters that have competed at least once in a U.S. Figure Skating qualifying competition at the novice level or higher in either a men's, ladies, ice dance or pairs event.

This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability or national origin. A total of $240,000 in scholarships will be awarded ranging from $4,000 to $8,000 per scholarship recipient, and scholarship awards will be announced in June - 2019.

Applications are currently open and the deadline to apply is Feb. 16, 2019.

The tests refresh project, approved by the 2017 Governing Council, goes into effect Sept. 2, 2018. New test forms will be used for all tests starting Sept. 2, 2018.

In this phase, the following changes will occur:
1. A marking transition from the 6.0 scale to a mark on a -3 to +3 scale.
2. Two new passing categories will be added: “pass with honors” and “pass with distinction.” To earn honors or distinction, a majority of the panel must mark the test at that level or higher. For example, in a three-judge panel, if the results were pass, honors and distinction, the overall result would be honors.
3. Three marks, elements, skating and program, will now be used for singles free skate, pairs and free dance tests. For pattern dance tests, the three marks are technique, timing and expression.
4. The serious error restriction rules, which mandated a retry test result, will be removed, allowing judges to use their judgment about the composite of the test while taking into account the prevalence and severity of error to determine the test result.
A handbook for tests is now available. This resource is all encompassing and includes the new changes referred to above. To download this handbook click here.
